Current Samaritan needs

St. John’s relies on our Samaritans to help us serve patients. We offer many opportunities for Samaritans to display their talents and interests as they are giving.

Below are descriptions of available openings. For more information, call the Samaritan office at (217) 544-6464, ext. 44205.

Birth Center
Help patients and families locate hospital services, find outside resources, take coffee/soda to rooms, deliver flowers and greet visitors. This is the perfect spot for a warm, outgoing person who enjoys working with people.
• 7 days a week; morning/afternoon/evening

Emergency Department
Help make families and patients comfortable, be a liaison between patients and families and straighten rooms after patients leave.
• Evenings and weekends
• Mondays, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
• Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. - noon
• Fridays, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2:30 - 4 p.m.

Escort Samaritans
• Openings available; call for specifics
• Substitutes always needed

Gift Cart
Take the gift cart to patient floors, restock the gift cart and sell to staff, patients and families.
• Tuesdays through Fridays

Gift Shops
• Wednesdays in Carol Jo Vecchie, 6 - 8 p.m
• Evenings and weekend slots open
• Substitutes always needed

Humor Cart
Bring cheer and fun to patients, families and staff. Just bring a good sense of humor and creativity.
• One day a week. Flexible hours.

Library Cart
Visit rooms and lobby areas where people are waiting. Our donated books and magazines are always helpful and provide some entertainment to those in need.
• Various days and times available

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Information Desk
Help ICU visitors and answer the phone.
• Weekdays after 3 p.m.
• Weekend mornings and afternoons

Magazine Distribution
Sort and weed out old issues of donated magazines. Distribute magazines to patients and their guests.
• Mondays through Fridays, flexible hours

Welcome Center
Samaritans are paired with a St. John’s staff member at lobby information desks to help answer the phone, respond to visitors’ questions and direct and escort visitors.
• Various days and times available
• Substitutes needed for all shifts

Patient Registration, 1st Floor
Escorting patients to appointment areas and help waiting families.
• Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. - noon

Parent Help Line
Visit mothers and newborn babies. Deliver Parent Help Line information and resources to provide support to parents.
• Mondays, Thursdays, alternate Fridays,
Saturdays and Sundays

Pavilion, 2nd Floor Registration Area
• Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. - noon

Prairie Heart Institute (PHI)
Main Floor Information Desk
• Mondays, 8 a.m. - noon
• Tuesdays, noon – 4:30 p.m.
• Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

PHI 3rd Floor Information Desk
• Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
• Wednesdays, noon - 4 p.m.
• Fridays, noon - 4 p.m.

PHI 3rd Floor Lounge
Assist families waiting for patients.
• First and second Wednesdays, 8 a.m.- noon
• Fridays, 8 a.m. - noon

PHI, 5th Floor Admitting
Take paperwork/patients (accompany or transport) to 4th Floor procedures.
• Fridays, 7:30 a.m. – noon

Radiology
Direct and escort patients and family members to appropriate areas within Radiology.
• Weekdays, noon - 4 p.m.

Special Projects
Assist in the Samaritan Office with special projects (some computer-related) and be on a list of Samaritans who can be called for special project requests from other departments.

Surgery Area, 3rd Floor Desk
Assist staff in a variety of errands (e.g., taking X-rays to doctors’ offices, restocking shelves with snacks, etc.).
• Mondays and Fridays, morning and afternoon

Surgery Area, Pre-Anesthesia
A new service requested by staff. After registration, escort the patient to a room in Pre-Anesthesia and help him/her get situated and comfortable. After the consultation is completed, you will take the patient to the surgery area.
• Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. - noon (Top Priority)
• Afternoon shifts also available

Surgery Family Waiting Room (3rd Floor)
Keep family informed of patient progress and offer coffee, tea and hospitality.
• Available shifts every day
• Substitutes always needed

Transitional Care Unit
Transport patients to in-house appointments, greet visitors, answer phones and bring water/ice to patients.
• Openings every day but Thursday

Pedi Pals
Serve as a resource for patients and family. If you enjoy working with people, are outgoing, friendly, self-directed, compassionate and in good physical health (you may have to stand for a long time), this could be the place for you!
• Various days and times available.

Pediatrics
Help the Child Life Specialists plan and carry out activities for children in the hospital.
• Flexible hours

Spiritual Care
Communion ministers and office support are needed. Please call Pastoral Care at ext. 55675.
• Friday mornings, 8 a.m. - noon

Junior Samaritan Program
Around 50 Junior Samaritans will participate this summer, and we want to ensure their experiences are both positive and relevant. Help is needed to plan out the program, work on schedules and coordinate with departments.

Samaritan Sewing Groups
Make Caps for Kids and dolls for pediatric surgery patients.
• Second Wednesday of the month

Print Shop
Clerical assistance needed.
• Various days and times available
