43 Students Graduate from St. John’s College of Nursing

Tonight 43 students are receiving their Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. John’s College of Nursing in a dual Mass and commencement ceremony at 5 p.m. at Christ the King Church. Tonight is also the final day of National Nurses Week.

“This commencement ceremony signifies the joyous accomplishments our graduates have attained over the last two years. The time is now for family and friends to celebrate the hard work in class and clinical experiences, leading to this fine group of graduates receiving a bachelor’s of science in nursing degree,” said Charlene Aaron, PhD, RN, chancellor of St. John’s College. “It is humbling and exhilarating at the same time, to watch the professional growth of each student’s journey through the nursing program. It is especially meaningful to celebrate their graduation during National Nurses Week. I have the utmost pride in our graduates and wish them a blessed nursing career.”

The 2017 class is celebrating not only their academic achievements, but also their transition into utilizing their skills to care for our community as they join the nursing workforce. HSHS St. John’s Hospital will employ over half of the graduates. The school’s close ties to the hospital make for a smooth transition from learning in the classroom to implementing what they’ve learned at their first job.

The partnership with the hospital also enables students to gain hands on experience and offers opportunities to get to know the people and procedures that many will be working with at the hospital after graduation.

“After graduation I will be working on the pediatric unit at St. John’s Children’s Hospital,” said Krista Duncan, class president. “Working with children is not always the easiest of tasks, but getting just one smile out of a child makes all the challenges worth it. I cannot wait to begin my nursing career and make a difference with St. John’s.” St. John’s College was founded by the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis and serves as an education ministry within the HSHS Central Illinois Division that includes St. John’s Hospital.
