HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital Announces Winner of Mascot Election

C.J. and Joey, a pair of kangaroos, are the winners of the 2017 HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital Mascot Election. This duo defeated Felix the fox who ran for mascot alongside his daughter, Felicia. C.J. and Joey are the incumbents; they’ve stood united as the HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital mascot since 2006.

The election ran from April 20-May 5. The election was facilitated through the children’s hospital website and netted nearly three thousand votes. C.J. and Joey captured a whopping 64 percent of the vote while Felix and Felicia ended with 36 percent.

“Felix and Felicia gave it a good shot, but these results prove that there’s a lot love for C.J. and Joey in our hospital and the greater Springfield community,” said Vernessa Glover, executive director of the HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital. “C.J. and Joey have represented the hospital well throughout the years. We look forward to their bright future with the HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital, as we continue to provide exceptional care to children in Springfield and throughout the region.”

C.J. and Joey were first elected in 2006 on a platform to encourage kids to jump into action (exercise), eat vegetables, be safe when traveling and spend time together as a family. The name C.J. was selected because St. John’s Children’s Hospital is located in the Carol Jo Vecchie Women and Children’s Center. Joey is the term used for baby kangaroos.
