HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital to Host NICU Family Reunion on July 16

This weekend, HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital will host a reunion for families whose children were patients in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) from 2009-2014. Patients, siblings, parents and grandparents have been invited to celebrate the progress that these children have made in their lives since leaving the NICU three to eight years ago. The event will be from 1-5 p.m. at Erin’s Pavilion on Sunday, July 16, 2017.

“We look forward to seeing so many past patients and their families come back for this NICU reunion,” said Vernessa Glover, executive director of St. John’s Children’s Hospital and women’s services. “Many of our doctors and nurses helped these families during their most difficult time, so to have an event to celebrate the strides these children have made is really exciting.”

St. John’s cares for nearly 2,000 babies each year, 600 who are premature or seriously ill and spend time in the NICU. The 40-bed, level III NICU serves patients throughout southern and central Illinois.

“We are expecting 500 people this weekend,” Glover said. “There will be activities for all ages, cake and refreshments. The doctors, nurses and other NICU staff will also be there to celebrate with the families in attendance.”

The NICU’s expert care team of neonatologists, nurse practitioners, RNs and respiratory therapists are specially trained to work with the smallest patients. This team also includes pharmacists, dietitians, lactation specialists, pediatric rehabilitation therapists, social workers and spiritual care staff members who provide outstanding service for patients and their families.
