Local Emergency Air Rescue Officials Sent on Rescue Mission for Hurricane Harvey Victims in Texas

An emergency flight nurse and a logistics manager based at HSHS St. John’s Hospital are part of an aircraft rescue team that was sent to Texas to provide medical support for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Joe Rios is the flight nurse, and Bobby Groves is helping manage logistics at the staging area. They are both part of the air rescue team at St. John’s called Saints Flight that is owned and operated by Air Methods Corp., the largest publicly owned air transportation provider in the world with 300 bases in 48 states.

On Sunday, August 27, an Air Methods crew from Springfield, Litchfield and Sullivan, Missouri flew down to Texas to begin their rescue mission. The five team members from the Litchfield Air Methods base at the Litchfield Fire Department are Shannon Dugger, a flight nurse; Darren Davis and Steve Piper, paramedics; and Bob Hester and Doug Rhodes, pilots.

“We ask that you pray for the hurricane victims’ safety and also for these brave men and women on the rescue team as they embark on this rescue mission,” said Charles L. Lucore, president and CEO of HSHS St. John’s Hospital.

CNN reported this morning that 2,000 people had been rescued in the “unprecedented” flooding in Houston from Hurricane Harvey. Houston officials say that the priority today is to get everyone rescued as many are still stranded in this catastrophic flooding. A record-breaking 50 inches of rain is expected in coming days.
